Our first day started out amazing. As we moved into our little wooden cabin it was quite cool already and we made the beds with sleeping bags and went to join everyone at dinner. Going to bed was a bit tricky because the bathrooms were quite far away and we're not allowed to walk alone at night. I knew either Derek or I would be getting woken up soon by someone needing the bathroom. We slept great but woke to a record heat wave for the community and I kept wondering how we were going to get any rest in our tin roofed, wooden cabin. Around lunch time Matt started to not feel well and spent most of the afternoon lying on a blanket in the shade. During the afternoon break we needed to run to town to buy some water and ended up at the mall enjoying as much of the air-conditioning as we could. We are used to heat in Rustenburg, but the heat wave happening in White River was something we had never experienced and Matt was starting to struggle.
I hate to spend money, especially when we already have a place to stay. But while sitting at the mall Derek and I started calling around to see if there were any B&Bs nearby that would at least allow the kids somewhere to go and cool off while we were in meetings. We found a great place, prayed about the decision, and then made a call. The owner was exceptionally kind and made space for us by brining in extra beds for the kids.
We went back for our meetings and as politely as we could explained that we had booked another accommodation. They too were so kind, most especially because our booking with them for a room had been lost and that is why we were in the tin roofed/wooded cabin to begin with. Normally, that would be fine, but again..the massive heat wave!
After an amazing evening worship service and training time, we went home and fell fast asleep. About 2 in the morning we were woken to Matt running an insanely high fever and vomiting. While cleaning him up and getting him settled again all I kept thinking was, "How would I have handled this in the cabin? How would I have gotten him to cool water? How would I have made him comfortable?" Over and over again I praised God for that little room at the B&B with its own bathroom and air-conditioning for our family.
The next day we ended up at a local doctor's office, with a woman who was perhaps the nicest doctor I have ever met. Her concern and attention to my boy blessed my heart. So, while Derek enjoyed the amazing leadership meetings and every afternoon and evening he would catch me up on all I was missing, Matt and I enjoyed a quite room in the mountains. By the last day he was feeling like his old self again and then we set off for home again. Not quite what I pictured the week to be like, but we're all happy and healthy and I got see God's kindness displayed again and again. Life is good.
