Happy Birthday Hermina!

On May 3rd, we got to share in the 91st birthday of Hermina, Agnes’s mom. It was very special to be able to bring her cake and presents. The boys and I have just finished The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and reading this book together brought out some really interesting conversations about apartheid in South Africa, slavery in America, human rights, and the sinful hearts of mankind. At one point they were pretty emotional about the character of Jim and how he was going to be “sold down to New Orleans.” Their young eyes are just beginning to open to the way man has sinned against man and truthfully it makes me a bit sad to see them learn these harsh realities. It made them ask questions like, “Was Agnes treated badly because she has brown skin?” And after the birthday party they wanted to know what life must have been like for Hermina over the years and how she must feel about all she has seen. I am so thankful for the opportunity to live in South Africa and be part of YWAM where we are constantly encountering new cultures and people groups. I am so thankful that my children believe whole-heartedly in the basic truth of loving their neighbor. And I am extremely thankful for Hermina and the children she has raised and the love she brings to her family.
